Session Description & Objectives

Delivering AI-driven industrial applications requires an integrated research view across the generation, processing, analysis and consumption of data. The implementation of the underlying data value chain significantly relies on synergies in enabling digital technologies, ranging from IoT to High Performance Computing (HPC), AI and Big Data to Robotics and Knowledge Graphs.

This session will explore the major issues of commonalities and the potential for technical advancement. Discussion will illuminate research priorities to amplify synergies across the areas of AI, Big Data, IoT, Cyber Security, HPC and Robotics.

Several Speaker representing related associations, such as ETP4HPC, AIOTI, Big Data Value, ECSO, EFFRA or euRobotics, as well as industry and research institutes / academia will share technical visions, thought-provoking thoughts and insights on emerging trends.

The session is expected to be highly interactive with short presentations and be complemented with panel discussion and moderated Q&A dialogue.

How to establish a foundation for the development / progressing of the European Data Value Ecosystem?

  1. What are emerging technical trends related to industrial AI application in the various associated technological areas AI, Big Data, IoT, HPC and Robotics? (questions e.g.: which parts of your technical roadmap are related to industrial AI applications? In which areas you see clear overlaps or complementary areas with the other technical areas)
  2. Best practices from past collaboration (questions e.g. What are good examples for successful collaboration that have been established in past? What was the focus? Why was it successful? What can we learn for the future?)
  3. What are future collaborative research areas? What are the main challenges in addressing those research areas? Any recommendation to set them up?

Need for further support to the foundation for the development of the European Data Value Ecosystem and their outcomes (questions e.g. what are the specific requirements of collaborative research undertaking? What can policy do to support joint research undertaking?

Expected Outcomes

  • Identification of collaborative research areas.
  • Scoping joint application scenarios to be further elaborated together.
  • Establishing a foundation for the development/progressing of the European Data Value Ecosystem.

Fabio Martinelli
Research director of the Italian National Research Council

Fabio Martinelli is a research director of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) where he is a referent for cybersecurity activities. His main research interests involve security and privacy in cyber-physical systems and foundations of security and trust. He usually manages R&D projects on information and communication security and in particular, He is currently the Project Coordinator of the EU Network on Cyber Security (ACS) and of the Collaborative information sharing and analytics for cyber protection (C3ISP) project. He also serves as an expert in the H2020 Protection and Security Advisory Group (PASAG) and acts as the first director in the Board of the European Cyber Security Organization (ECSO). He is also a member of the Italian Committee for Cyber Security Research (as CNR security expert).

Arian Zwegers
Programme Officer at the European Commission

Arian Zwegers is a Programme Officer at the European Commission, Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content & Technology, unit “Technologies & Systems for Digitising Industry”. He received a PhD from the Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands for his contribution to the system architecting field. After his PhD, he worked for the Philips Electronics’ Centre for Manufacturing Technology, Baan Development, and PlatteConsult. In the Commission, he worked on enterprise interoperability, service engineering, the Future Internet Public-Private Partnership and now on the Digitising European Industry initiative.

Chris Decubber
Technical Director at EFFRA

After obtaining his master of electro-mechanical engineering at the University of Leuven, Chris got involved fairly quickly in European research and innovation programmes.

At EFFRA, Chris Decubber aims at generating consensus on research and innovation priorities among the industrial and research community for the 'Factories of the Future' PPP. Chris coordinates the monitoring of the outcome and progress of the 'Factories of the Future' PPP and works on knowledge transfer mechanisms that enhance the impact of the FoF PPP. Chris also coordinates the ConnectedFactories Coordination Action which focuses on the stimulating the digitisation of manufacturing.
