GDPR, PERSONAL DATA PLATFORMS
AND THE TELCO INDUSTRY

BDVA WORKSHOP

Room - Lulli

11:00h

In April 2016 the European Commission released the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which replaces the old Directive residing from 1995 and also harmonizes national legislation into one new Regulation. In general, it affects the way data is collected, used and as well protected. The new Regulation will be fully enforceable in member states by May 2018 and should give back users the right to decide on their own private data. Personal data are at the core of current big data analytics. The telecommunication sector holds massive amount of data spanning from operational data, customer related information, up to billing and call records, just to name a few. Thus, the telecommunication industry is strongly influenced by this new regulation. While GDPR is demanding for transparency and more control for end users on how their data can be accessed, as well as recognizing different users’ rights, including data portability, a successful business model to both access computation capabilities and allow re-use of the personal data assets fails to emerge. Moreover, protecting customer privacy is critical and a must in the telecommunication sector. While complying with the GDPR still there should be room for innovation and the burden on businesses should be not too high. During the work shop we will discuss the influence of the newly introduced GDPR on the telco sector, explore and review the role of personal data platforms, to open new business opportunities making use of data available in the telecommunication sector.
